Since 2003, Orkney has been home to EMEC, The European Marine Energy Centre. It is a world centre providing developers of wave and tidal energy converters, with open-sea testing facilities. The wave energy converter shown is a 500kW Penguin 2 made by Wello Oy, a Finnish company. The Penguin was installed at Billia Croo in March 2017 as part of the Horizon 2020 funded
Clean Energy From Ocean Waves (CEFOW) research project coordinated by Fortum. The Penguin remained on site for over two years, surviving numerous storms including wave heights of up to 18.7 m experienced during storm Caroline.
